EXCERPT: Fly fishing for bass is strictly American. It is a product of the colonization of America by Europeans. The earliest bass fly-fisher may have been run-away slaves hiding in the Florida swamps with the Seminoles in the late 1700s. They used a "bug" made from whitetail deer hair fished on a short line. Old-timers will recognize the technique as "jiggerpole" fishing - a deadly short-range tactic still in use in some parts of the south today.
Despite the pre-occupation of most modern fly anglers with trout, largemouth bass - and to a lesser extent the smallmouth bass - are truly "America's Fish." This is reflected in the tournament craze and the growth of the bass tackle industry in the last three decades. Fly-fishing for bass has not kept pace with the plastic worm crown, indeed, it has been considerable reduced since the late 1950's, but it has developed a respectable minority following which is beginning to grow nicely as we enter the 21st century.
