EXCERPT: Preface
This book is made up of three different elements arranged in chronological order. The first element is a chronicle of events and achievements of individuals and organizations that forged the independent United States Air Force in 1947, and then continued the rich traditions already established as a branch within the U.S. Army into the twenty-first century. The second element is a collection of short essays written by more than thirty scholars'experts in specific air and space history fields'which expand upon specific events, aircraft, technologies, or people throughout each chapter. These essays follow related chronological entries and consist of two pages placed face to face with a slightly different background design so that they might be easily identified. The third element is the introductory narrative which is designed to provide a broad contextual background for each chapter. Throughout the book are laced more than one thousand illustrations including works of art, photographs, and artifact images. It is hoped that these illustrations will help the reader to better visualize and appreciate both the technology of flight and the vast range of emotions surrounding flying activities'in the air and on the ground.
