A ?how-to? manual for smoking and canning (or ?jarring?) one of Alaska?s most prized resources. Many photos to illustrate the process, as well as historic & contemporary pictures. 10-pg. color photo section, 193 B&W illus; 7x10 inches, 96 pgs.

'This 'how-to' manual for smoking and canning or 'jarring' one of Alaska's most prized resources is also a tribute to Rika Florence Murphy. The first recognized chief of the Kenaitze Indian Tribe, Rika lovingly passed on her precise methods to her daughter and author, Hazel Felton.

In addition to its step-by-step instructions, the book includes detailed design plans for the construction of an 'urban smokehouse,' providing city dwellers with a means to re-create these traditional techniques of processing salmon. The book contains many photos to illustrate the process, as well as historic and contemporary pictures.

PRAISE FOR PUTTING UP FISH ON THE KENAI:
"This is far more than a "how to" guide. As their ancestors did, the Dena'ina infuse the salmon with a part of themselves--with their love--through the proper execution of "putting up fish." Later, when people travel from house to house the words, "I have some salmon for you", take on a special meaning as the produce of the land merges with the people's bond of kinship in the sharing of salmon." --Alan Borass, Professor of Anthropology, Kenai Peninsula College

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
