Finished products include a set of Civil War drums, secret codes, and a Civil War spy glass. Detailed step-by-step instructions, diagrams, and templates for each project are interspersed with historical facts, biographies, anecdotes, and trivia about the real-life models. Most of the building can be done using simple household supplies: construction paper, tape, markers, glue, cardboard tubes, string, yarn, aluminum foil, and cardboard boxes.

Every soldier quickly learned how to build a simple lean-to shelter. Usually fallen logs or large branches from fallen trees were readily available, and when the soldiers were told to set up camp,they scrambled to create a lean-to shelter. They would take two branches about three or four feet in length, and stick them into the ground. Another log or heavy branch was tied to the tops of the branches. Then a few more branches were "leaned" against the top branch, and the soldiers had the framework for their shelter.
Some soldiers who had an extra blanket would stretch the blanket across the shelter. Others, who did not want to give up their extra blanket (it could get quite cold at night!) or who did not have an extra blanket, would simply use moss, leaves, brush, ferns, or whatever was available.
MATERIALS NEEDED FOR CONTRUCTING A CIVIL WAR LEAN-TO:
* 2 branches, between 3 & 4 ft. long, with a Y at one end
* 5 branches between 4 & 5 ft. long
* old blanket
* heavy cord or kite string
