Written for hunters, this book offers gentle training methods. Back-to-basics is the rule; revives the fundamentals of solid retriever training. How to pick a pup that will likely be calm & obedient, & then how to train that pup on the basics of steadiness & obedience to create the perfect hunting & at-home companion. 70 B&W photos; 6x9 inches, 216 pgs.

'Through gentle training methods learned from Ray Hunt--the original "horse whisperer"--Robert Milner shows retriever owners how to train the hunting retriever by using its own natural tendencies instead of force. Supplemented with the latest scientific research on how dogs learn, his easy step-by-step training regimen uses positive reinforcement to create the perfect hunting and at-home companion. There is no better training method for the hunter who wants a calm, steady, and obedient retriever.

If it seems like today's retrievers are becoming increasingly hyperactive and hard to train, well, they are, says Robert Milner in this new book on retriever training. And the fault is not only in the breeding but in the training, both of which render a dog better suited for field trials than hunting. Milner shows us how to pick a pup that is likely to be calm and obedient, and how to train that pup on the basics of steadiness and obedience to create the perfect hunting and at-home companion.

Milner, who has been training retrievers professionally for more than 30 years, reverses the trend of difficult dogs and difficult training methods and offers a system every hunter can understand and follow.

WHAT THE EXPERTS ARE SAYING:
'It may well be the best book on the subject since Dick Wolter's Gun Dog, which came out nearly a half-century ago.' --Dave Rossie, Press & Sun-Bulletin, Sept. 10, 2000
