NOTES BY THE AUTHOR:
Being on the stream & catching a trout is great fun...but fooling a trout on a fly you tied - or even created - can be a very staisfying & rewarding experience.

If there is one thing that I have learned while doing research on this project, it is that fly patterns for these Michigan hatches is a forum open to debate! If I went to four different fly shops for a Hendrickson pattern, chances are I would receive 4 different flies. From compara duns to parachutes, to quill bodies or fur, mallard wings and synthetic wings etc...etc... There are a LOT of patterns out there for the Hendrickson alone.

They have been helping fly fishermen catch trout for years and will continue doing so for a long time to come. Some are newer and others have been enhanced by more up-to-date tying materials. All will help you on the stream. Now, when you call your favorite fly shop and hear the "Brown Drakes" are hatching, you can look up the hatch info. Also, now that you have the basics like hook size, body color, wing color and one good pattern to copy...experiment a little. Try a quill body instead of fur, wrap on a synthetic wing instead of a mallard flank. Use some HI-VIS in place of a tail and now you have a trailing shuck. Keep the size and color similar to the original pattern and your options are open.

My hope is that this guide will aid you in selecting the proper Trout Flies for the Michigan Emergence Schedule.
