With side-splitting, self-deprecating humor, Doug shares his attempts to elevate himself past his perpetual state of greenhorn-ness by aligning himself with tough sourdoughs. 5x8 inches, 224 pgs.

'Now here's a formula for near disaster: West Coast big-city guy, world-traveler, journalist, and otherwise politically savvy fellow settles down in rural Alaska, where men are many and manly, and women with survival skills are good to count among your friends. He wants to fit in. But how does one learn to be a Mountain Man' By observing, imitating, and making near-fatal mistakes, that's how.

The choices a boy has to make. Eat processed food or on-the-hoof food, learn to operate a chainsaw or freeze to death, figure out what a bunny boot is or lose a few toes and, by the way, which end of the barrel points up' This is the story of Doug's first difficult winter in a one-room cabin, trying to stay alive and come out of it with some semblance of Alaska cool. With side-splitting, self-deprecating humor, Doug shares his attempts to elevate himself past his perpetual state of greenhorn-ness by aligning himself with tough sourdoughs to someday claim the title of manly Mountain Man.

EXCERPT FROM NOT REALLY AN ALASKAN MOUNTAIN MAN:
I fitted my yellow-tinted Smith ski goggles on my forehead as I stepped outside into the Alaskan afternoon, feeling a little rugged. Mountain Man Roger Longhenry's mouth was formed into the unmistakable "O" of laughter suppression on the deck steps outside my only door.

I hadn't done anything overly-Cheechakoey since a near-fatal soldering incident late in the stove installation process nearly an hour earlier. All I had done just now was step inside to "grab some gear" for the chainsaw demonstration.

"You...ah, planning on hitting the slopes'" Roger sort of guffawed, rubbing his palm in a downward motion over his mouth and chin to erase a smile.

Ah, yes. The ski goggles, sitting atop a full black-knit mask of Subcomandante Marcos variety, puzzled this Mountain Man friend of mine, who spent pretty much all his life doing things like throwing in wood stoves and firing upchainsaws.
