'The nature of kingfish and the waters they inhabit mean they are always a challenge to land and can never be taken for granted. Making them even more interesting is the fact that they can be caught using a wide variety of methods in very different locations and environments. Through years of working in fishing tackle shops, Mark has seen and heard what people really need to know to catch a kingie. This book answers those questions. He starts with an introduction to kingfish behaviour, then discusses the type of bait required and techniques to suit the conditions. Sections on the various lure options and techniques, as well as specific kingfish situations follow. Complemented by Mark's attractive and informative illustrations, and many photographs, this book is a must for any keen kingie fisherman.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Mark Kitteridge has been a fisherman for as long as he can remember, starting with eels, cockabullies and 'crawlies' in Hutt Valley creeks to the current day, where anything that swims is in potential danger. With his mother's words "You'll never get a decent job if you keep fishing all the time" still echoing in his ears, Mark has led a life heavily influenced by fishing, both in his spare time... and at his work. A part-time job at the local sports shop kicked things off, and the next few years were a mix of university (where he got a special mention for improving his backhand at tennis and drinking lots of beer), extended fishing trips (one of which lasted a year and a half) and working at various Tisdalls Sports shops as their resident 'fishing expert'. During this time, Mark became a keen member of the Wellington Angling and Surfcasting Club. Although just the first of many fishing clubs for Mark, this club gave him the 'Wellington Attitude': a mix of absolute commitment to the sport of fishing accompanied by a healthy dollop of competitiveness. However, the exotic lure of warmer northern fishing proved too much in the end, and following a short stint at Kilwell Sports in Rotorua, Mark shifted to Auckland. After working at Tisdalls Sports for a couple of years he helped to start up and then manage Just Fishin' with Tony Bishop. Over the eight years he was there, the specialist fishing tackle store gained both national and international recognition, successfully attracting anglers from all over the country and the rest of the world. In addition, he was also made Field Editor for the NZ Fishing News magazine, and participated in a variety of television fishing shows (some of which he hosted) and videos (including the all-time classic 'Snapper Secrets'), as well as sporadically writing for overseas fishing magazines. Mark departed the retail trade when offered the role of Deputy Editor for the New Zealand Fisherman magazine, and soon his how-tos, tall tales, photos and illustrations peppered the pages (although bemused close associates often wondered how this could be done when he always seemed to be out fishing). Whilst under the Review Publishing umbrella, Mark also became the editor of NZ Gamefisher, a glossy quarterly magazine that focused on sportfishing. But as so often happens in publishing, the big wheel turned three years later and he was back with New Zealand Fishing News as their assistant editor ' where he works to this day. Finally, Mark has won many fishing contests, mostly for snapper and kingfish, and holds several national and world records, including one for the heaviest fly-caught yellowfin tuna in the world: a fish of 37kg (82-lb) taken on 10kg tippet. His future ambitions include catching a snapper over 30-lb ' because he's only caught them to around 28-lb up till now...
