ABOUT THE PUBLISHER: Perched on a hilltop in Middleton, Wisconsin, we are surrounded by wild meadows and oak forests. Deer, wild turkeys, and even bobcats leave their mark in our yard. What a perfect place to create children's nature books! We admit to being subversive: We aim to turn young readers into environmentally aware earth citizens and to foster a love of science and nature in the new generation. How' By capturing first their interest and then their hearts and minds with interactive games, mysteries, puzzles, and stories.
How did Dog-Eared Publications get its name and logo' Sometimes people mark their place in a book by turning down the corner of a page. These pages are "dog-eared." We turned our love for both books and dogs into a fun name for a company. Since we raise golden retrievers, we use a golden retriever head with its ear showing for our logo. Back on the first Earth Day in 1970, the seeds of Dog-Eared Publications and its "Discovering"books for children were sown.
That year publisher Nancy Field ("Nan") organized the first Earth Day events at South Dakota State University in Brooking, S.D., where she was working on a master's degree in wild life biology. Having one day a year to celebrate and call attention to the environment is good, but she wondered how to reach more people more of the time. Children's books seemed to be the perfect answer. As proof, Dog-Eared Publications today is proud of their many successful titles, including Ancient Forests and Discovering Earthquakes, both winners of 1996 Parents' Choice Awards.
Nan has a B.S. in biology and science education from the University of Wisconsin and an M.S. in wildlife biology from South Dakota State University.Certified by the Wildlife Society as an associate wildlife biologist, Nancyhas lived in Seattle, WA, and Corvallis, OR. She also taught biology and environmental science at Bellevue Community College, Western Oregon State College, and Oregon State University. In 1988, Nancy moved to Middleton,WI, with her husband, Donald R. Field (a forestry professor at the University of WI, Madison). They have started another small publishing company called Social Ecology Press for Don and his colleagues. They have three children, Peggy, Andrew and young Don and one granddaughter, Kendall.
