FOREWORD: By Lefty Kreh I don't remember when I first met Jon Cave, but it was a long time ago. What I do remember clearly is that I was immediately impressed with this knowledgeable but soft-spoken fly fisherman. Through the years, I've found there are two basic kinds of fly-fishermen/outdoor writers/teachers: those who display their knowledge and those who share it. Those who attempt to demonstrate to their students or others how accomplished they are only put people off. But those show share their knowledge enrich everyone they come in contact with. Jon is a sharer.
As you'll see in this book, Jon has had a rewarding fly-fishing life, traveling to near and distant waters and fishing for a wide variety of species. But this book is much more than just an author sharing his experiences. He gives interesting facts about the habits and prey preferences of each of the fish he seeks. This is invaluable information to a fly-fisherman. Then he recommends from experience the kind of tackle needed, including a list of his favorite flies.
Many of his trips were to distant places, such as New Zealand, Costa Rica and British Columbia. But Jon also gives meticulous information about many species that can be caught locally.
The appendixes alone are worth the price of the book. They are chock-full of information, such as a travel list, how to get more rods aboard an airplane, how you can build a leader to fit your own fishing conditions and much, much more.
Yes, Jon is one who shares. This book is a unique combination of exciting fishing tales and priceless information that any fly-fisherman can profit from. I recommend this book to anyone who loves the sport. You'll find it not only a pleasure to read, but also a tool to increase your knowledge and skills of the sport.
INTRODUCTION By Jon B. Cave In the sport we call fly-fishing, it's often the means that justify the end. That's because fly-fishing is much more than the act of catching a fish with a fly. It's about salmon clearing a powerful rapid in pursuit of ancestral breeding grounds, humpback whales breaching in a bay near a school of roosterfish or traditional Mosquito Indian women washing clothes in a remote Honduran coastal river. It's about making that perfect cast to a particularly wary or selective fish, the apprehensions and satisfactions that come with buying a new skiff and the pleasures of an exquisitely engineered rod matched to a jewellike reel. Fly-fishing is about passion, observation, nature, adventure, cultural diversity, skill, travel, friendship and any number of other intangibles that add pleasure to the act of casting flies.
Working in the fly-fishing industry as a casting instructor, consultant, guide, writer and photographer has given me the unique opportunity to pursue my passion for fly-fishing at some of the world's premier angling destinations. I would be the first to admit that I have truly been fortunate to be the 'someone' tasked with this 'tough job.' The result of my life's fly-fishing adventures rests in your hands -- my fly-fishing odyssey. This book isn't intended to be another nuts-and-bolts text that rehashes facts and techniques already thoroughly covered by innovators like Lefty Kreh. Nor is it fly-fishing literature in the manner of Roderick Haig-Brown or tongue-in-cheek humor the way only Charlie Waterman can spin it.
My intention is to take you on a quest for some of the world's top freshwater and saltwater game fish, stirring within you the wanderlust and sense of adventure that I believe most fly-fishermen possess. I'll also attempt to answer many of the nagging questions that most traveling fly-fishermen ask themselves at one time or another: Where are the best places to fly-fish' What fly tackle and traveling gear will I need to take to help insure a successful and enjoyable trip' How do I catch a particular species' Is there anything else to see or do when I'm not fly-fishing'
Another byproduct of my travelogue hopefully will be an increased understanding of the fish we pursue, no matter where you chase them. For instance, many of the nuances of fly-fishing for permit in the Florida Keys may be just as applicable for permit in Belize. Techniques used for trout in Yellowstone National Park can work just as well in Argentina. To tie all this information up into a reference you can use, I've included a section called 'The Fishes' at the back of the book. It provides a brief synopsis of the biology of numerous game fish, along with the fly gear needed to catch them at various destinations.
Deserved or not, fly-fishermen have a reputation for being elitists, but money and the enjoyment of fly-fishing at distant locations needn't go hand in hand. Not all of us have the resources to travel to an expensive lodge to catch exotic fish. So for fly-fishers willing to forego a wine list, gourmet food and fancy quarters, I've included some bargains, along with enough information to make a do-it-yourself trip a real possibility.
Just because a fish hasn't yet attained the legendary status of the trout or permit certainly doesn't make it any less fun or exciting to catch with a fly. My earliest fly-fishing escapades came at a young and tender age when a trip to the creek in the woods down the road from our family home seemed as big an adventure as an Indiana Jones search for lost treasure. In my imagination, the small minnows, hand-sized bluegills and occasional bass that my friends and I caught were as challenging, exciting and extraordinary as some of the bonefish and tarpon that I catch today. That's why I've included pages on some of the common, everyday fish that are available to most fly-fishers.
By the same token, even though the greatest portion of this odyssey takes place in various foreign countries and destinations in the United States, there are also chapters devoted to a few of the wonderful local waters near my home in Geneva, Florida. It's often easy to take for granted the fisheries that may exist in your own back yard. It's the grass-is-greener on-the-other-side syndrome. However, that's not the case here. No fly-fishing odyssey would be complete without including those nearby world-class fisheries that have had such an impact on my life.
Let's begin the journey.
