Arthur Ransome, born in 1884, went on to become famous as the author of the Swallows & Amazons books, known all over the world. He spent many happy summers at Nibthwaite, on the shores of Coniston Water & worked for the Manchester Guardian as a foreign correspondent, travelling to Russia & reporting at first-hand the events of the Revolution in 1917.
